The Associate Information Security Officer is a position within Stanford’s Information Security Office (ISO) that serves as an IT security subject matter expert, and under general direction, develops and implements enterprise IT security architecture and solutions. The ISO is charged with establishing and maintaining a strong information security posture for Stanford while supporting the University’s teaching, research and health care missions. This role, reporting directly to Stanford’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), will be an individual contributor on a team that works together to achieve this goal for the University. This person will collaborate with department and other University staff to protect Stanford’s computing and information assets and to comply with pertinent laws, regulations and policies.

Core responsibilities include partnering with organizations throughout Stanford to promulgate information security improvements; participating in security risk assessments and mitigations with department and other University staff; inspecting system and network data for computer and network usage policy compliance, system integrity and incident response; developing and delivering educational information to system administrators and users; contributing toward the development and documentation of information security standards, best practices and guidelines; and maintaining a state-of-the-art awareness of information security issues, incidents, problems, utilities, legal requirements and solutions for all major information system platforms in use at Stanford. Additionally, in coordination with team members, will develop plans to safeguard computer configurations against accidental or unauthorized modification, destruction or disclosure; develop and implement ongoing test plans to ensure compliance with standards and processes; and research, design and advocate new technologies, architectures and security products.

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in computer science (or equivalent) plus five years of relevant experience, strong knowledge of authentication protocols, encryption and other fundamental security technologies, and familiarity with industry standard information security practices. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and work effectively with individuals at all levels, and possess experience with debugging, troubleshooting, forensics and security utilities. Also requires advanced knowledge and understanding of networking protocols, principles and devices; excellent judgment concerning proprietary and privacy issues; and fundamental architecture and configuration knowledge of desktop and server operating systems. Ability to lead projects is a plus.
