Information security in a wide-open environment. That's the challenge at the University of California Santa Barbara. UCSB is seeking a skilled security practitioner to develop and implement a program and processes for pen. testing, APT discovery, incident response, and for the forensic collection and analysis of digital data at a world renowned research institution located in one of the most geographically desirable places in the US.
Universities are special places where security needs must be balanced with the openness required for academic freedom. Sensitive and regulated data abound including FERPA, HIPAA, PCI, and intellectual property. Few other environments are more challenging, more exciting, and more rewarding.
The distributed implementation of security controls on university campuses creates special risks that may not be present in commercial enterprises. Vulnerability management and pen testing are critical tools to assess the protection of sensitive data and systems. The forensic collection and analysis of digital information is a critical component of managing a security incident and of many investigations. These are the activities that are central to this challenging position. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal skills to complement a full range of technical knowledge. Collaboration, collegiality, and consensus are hallmarks of higher education.
UCSB is home to 5 Nobel Laureates, more than 22,000 students from 71 countries, and a faculty and staff population totaling more than 6500. UCSB is also home to Seclab with 3 internationally known faculty doing cutting-edge security research.
