July 2026: Frenemy Mine: Thirty years of Watching Security and Identity Fight the Wrong War

Date:
Tuesday, July 21, 2026 - 5:30pm
Topic:

Sixty-plus years of authentication history, and the login box is still the thing that makes grown security engineers visibly wince. This talk traces the arc from the invention of the password in 1961 through hardware tokens, SMS OTP, push authentication, and MFA fatigue, to the passkey era — finally an interesting solution, with a dispiriting adoption curve. I'll use the Four Ps framework from my book Mastering Digital Identity to name the design flaw running through all six decades — and for those of you experiencing authentication depression, there's a prescription at the end.

Key Topics Covered
