This talk traces the arc from the invention of the password in 1961 through hardware tokens, SMS OTP, push authentication, and MFA fatigue, to the passkey era — finally an interesting solution, with a dispiriting adoption curve. I'll use the Four Ps framework from my book Mastering Digital Identity to name the design flaw running through all six decades — and for those of you experiencing authentication depression, there's a prescription at the end.
